Metal Basics
The sounds of metal guitar are closer than you might think.
To kick off the Learing Pathway, MYRONE wlil show you how to use techniques and concepts you already know to quickly get a metal sound in your playing.
Picking-Hand Technique
With your essential metal foundation forged, you'll sharpen your picking skills in Grade 2.
Here, you'll dive into essential techniques like picking angles, downpicking, chugging, sweep picking, and more.
Fretting-hand technique
This grade is all about how to develop your metal vocabulary and bring it to life with expressive techniques.
First, you'll focus on hexatonic scale patterns to bring out new colors into your vocabulary.
Then, you'll explore how legato technique can glue it all together and give you a major speed boost.
Let’s be real – very few of us got into guitar to learn music theory and strum chords. We daydreamed about melting faces with godlike solos.
This grade will get you closer to that dream. You'll work on a ton of fun techniques to fuel your soloing like tapping, harmonics, tremolo picking, harmonies, and more.
In Grade 5, we'll shift focus to rhythm by exploring iconic metal riff techniques. You’ll cover essential riffs using the minor scale, open strings, octaves, pinch harmonics, alternate tunings, and more.
There's an entire world of metallic diversity out there. The history of metal is like watching cells divide in a petri dish – two split into four, four into eight, eight into sixteen…
In this grade, we’ll check out some of the most important iterations of metal and learn how to recreate their sounds.
Stay focused with this step-by-step learning program designed by our expert team of music educators.
Grade 1. Metal Fundamentals
Take what you know and make it metal.
We're with you every step of the way in this Learning Pathway. In every lesson, MYRONE will break down a new concept and run through guided practice exercises with you so you can lock it into your muscle memory. To cap off each day's work, you'll put what you learned in a musical context with an interactive jam session.
Day 1. Power chords
The #1 essential building block for heavy metal music is the power chord, consisting of only two notes: the root and the fifth. To kick off the course, you'll learn to unleash the power of this uniquely stable chord form that's built for speed. 😈
Day 2. Scale-based riffs
If you want to write killer riffs and improvise epic solos, you’ll need scales to soar over your power chords. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to construct E minor riffs starting at the seventh fret.
Day 3. The “home base” shape
Soloing like MYRONE is going to be easier than you think. It’s all about creating a “home base” from which your guitar solos can originate. For many of us guitarists, that oasis of comfort is the minor pentatonic shape. You'll explore that here in Day 3.
Day 4. Diagonal octaves
Today is about taking your new foundation and seeing how easy it is to move across the fretboard. You'll learn how to get extra mileage out of Day 3's melody by diagonally moving it up the octaves.
Day 5. Introduction to arpeggios
If you’ve been awe-struck by the classically inspired shredding of Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, or Jason Becker – today is for you. Here, you'll learn arpeggios – a fantastic way to add sophistication to your metal riffs and solos. They’re the natural melodic evolution from the comforts of your home base.
Day 6. Clean tone in metal
In this lesson, you’ll get valuable perspective on the presence and importance of clean tone in metal music While metal is known for being loud and aggressive, it's essential to create contrast within your music – this is where clean tones come into play.
Day 7. Workout
The mega-track in this lesson will help you gauge your progress by calling upon your newfound metal foundations.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Final quiz
Make sure you're ready for Grade 2.
Grade 2. Picking-Hand Technique
Shine a spotlight on your picking hand to speed up your playing and lock into the rhythm of the band.
Day 1. Picking angles
The way you hold that little piece of plastic is crucial, it’s responsible for: Attack, timing, speed, and tone. When you first start playing guitar, these nuances aren’t a priority but as you progress, they become more important. Today, we’ll give your pick grip a full metal makeover.
Day 2. The chug
Palm muting is a common guitar technique in most genres, but metal takes it to the extreme. Thrash metal bands popularized this thick, heavy, rhythm sound back in the 80s. Since then, the chug has spread throughout the metal world. Even the ‘djent’ sound made famous by Meshuggah is just an extension of the humble chug. Today, you’ll dive deep into chug land.
Day 3. Downpicking
Up the intensity of any relentless riff with downpicking. Efficiency and ergonomics are great, but in metal, power takes priority. For those of you who favor alternate picking, this approach may seem a little alien – but trust us, there’s a method in the madness.
Day 4. Galloping
Legendary knights of the metal realm such as Deep Purple and Iron Maiden popularized this rhythm style. In Day 4, you’ll dive deep into galloping, thundering triplets to add a sense of urgency to your playing.
Day 5. Alternate picking
So far we’ve explored how different picking styles impact the sound or feel of a riff. Today is focused on one important factor – speed! You may be able to achieve a decent burst of speed with downpicking, but maintaining a rapid pace for an entire song (or show) isn’t happening. Alternate picking provides an ergonomic and efficient alternative.
Day 6. Sweep picking
When you need more speed and more notes across more strings… get your broom out 🧹 In this lesson, you’ll fulfill your need for speed with sweep picking. Sweep picking lets you play wide, fluid arpeggios with minimal effort from the picking hand. The main challenge is to get your left and right hand to move perfectly in sync.
Day 7. Workout
The mega-track in this lesson will help you gauge your progress by calling upon your new metal picking skills.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Final quiz
Make sure you're ready for Grade 3.
Grade 3. Fretting-Hand Technique
Switch focus to your fretting hand as you explore hexatonic scale across your fretboard and bring them to life with expressive techniques.
Day 1. Introduction to hexatonic scale patterns
It’s time for your fretting hand to catch up with your picking hand – and that means learning THE scale. Today, you’ll start your journey to climb the hexatonic scale pattern mountain.
Day 2. Hexatonic scale patterns
By this point in the pathway, you’ll already have three options to play the E minor scale. Today, you’ll complete the whole set.
Day 3. Hexatonic octave patterns
Today, we’ll finally honor the ‘hex’ of hexatonic. You’ll learn how to navigate the fretboard diagonally using groups of six notes.
Day 4. Legato: Hammer ons
The next three days will quench your thirst for speed. Picking can only take you so far, so in order to set your licks on fire, you’ll need to involve legato techniques. First up: Hammer ons.
Day 5. Legato: Pull offs
If hammer ons rise into the sky like flames, pull offs are like waterfalls. You want your licks to rush down. Today, you’ll learn how to play a scale descending with the same ferocity as you do when ascending.
Day 6. Legato
Scales… You might be tired of them by now, but rest assured, all this practice will pay off when you’re nailing furiously-fast licks in the future. Today, you’ll combine hammer ons and pull offs to play a pattern.
Day 7. Workout
The mega-track in this lesson will help you gauge your progress by calling upon your new metal fretting-hand skills.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Final quiz
Make sure you're ready for Grade 4.
Grades 4, 5, & 6
This grade is a ton of fun. It's all about spicing up your new soloing skills with iconic metal techniques.
Day 1. Tapping
Tapping is an iconic technique that’ll give your playing some serious flair. Though you might think of it as a party trick, its spot has been cemented in the hall of metal fame by many a shredder. Today, you’ll dive into tapping.
Day 2. Guitar harmonies
Harmonies are as old as time itself, and, much like Ozzy, have survived against all odds. No genre showcases dual guitar harmonies quite like heavy metal. Bands like Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden put them front and center. They built entire songs around this powerful sound. Today, you’ll learn to shred in stereo.
Day 3. Harmonics
There are secret pitches hidden within our strings. You may already be familiar with those natural harmonics found on the 12th, 7th, and 5th frets Some people even use them to tune up their guitar. However, did you know you can generate a series of harmonics for any fret using a special picking technique? Today, MYRONE will show you how to conquer harmonics.
Day 4. Pedal point
Feeling classy? Add some sophistication to your solos with this neo-classical technique.
Day 5. Tremolo picking
We covered alternate picking on Day 2, so you’ll be well prepared for the mechanics of tremolo picking when you get here, but there’s a distinct difference between these two concepts. Alternate picking is a foundational technique and is used frequently. Tremolo picking is a decorative technique used to play a rapid string of repeating notes.
Day 6. String skipping
Here, you’ll explore string skipping, which will enable you to play large octave jumps without moving up or down the neck, more intense percussive arpeggios, and interesting licks with unusual note groupings.
Day 7. Bonus lesson: Whammy 101
This last lesson depends on your guitar – a floating bridge is necessary for these techniques. If you have one, MYRONE will show you how to pull off three killer whammy-bar techniques.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Final quiz
Make sure you're ready for Grade 5.
Get ready to chug your way through some seriously sick riffs.
Day 1. Open-string riffs in E
Now that your fretting and picking hands have acquired all kinds of fancy new skills, it’s time to put them to work and learn some common phrases.
Day 2. Open strings & power-chord riffs
Open E and A strings pack so much power, it’s no surprise that E and A minor are popular keys for metal riffs.
Day 3. Open-string riff with thirds
Today features a fun variation for the harmonically-minded shredder: Combine an open string with thirds on top.
Day 4. Riffing with octaves
By now, you’ll have caught on to the fact that metal guitarists don’t work harder, they work smarter. When we take these classic riffs apart, the ingredients are simple but effective. Today, you’ll look at another “trick”: Adding octaves to a riff.
Day 5. Drop-D tuning
You’ve learned how to utilize the open E string. Turns out that tuning it down to D sounds even grittier. Drop-D is one of the most common alternate tunings and is used in all kinds of genres – we’ll dive deep into it in Day 5.
Day 6. Slides
You probably know how to slide, but can you make your slides metal? Jazzcats slip into a note from a half-step below, blues players might cover a few more frets, and metal guitarists go all the way. You’ll learn slides the metal way in Day 6.
Day 7. Pinch Harmonics in Rhythm
Today, you’ll apply one more concept from an earlier grade – pinch harmonics – to a rhythm part.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Final quiz
Make sure you're ready for Grade 6.
So many styles, so little time.
Day 1. Thrash metal
Young musicians will always try to find ways to push the boundaries and up the intensity of what came before – thrash metal is a perfect example of this. The founding members of Metallica were in their teens when they started. They wanted to make an impact in a big way and ultimately became one of the biggest thrash metal bands in the world. Today, you’ll learn all about the style and explore how to capture some iconic thrash sounds in your playing.
Day 2. Groove metal
Everybody loves to groove – even metalheads. Yessterday we looked at thrash, which is pretty rigid – all the beats and notes feel synchronized. Groove metal, on the other hand, takes things in a looser rhythmic direction – more syncopated. In Day 2, you’ll get your groove on – metal style.
Day 3. Nu metal
In the 2000’s musical subcultures began to intertwine – nu metal welcomed elements from hip-hop and electronic music into the mix. Today, you’ll explore clean chords and swelling lead lines in the nu metal style.
Day 4. Metalcore
Dramatic dynamic shifts, massive breakdowns, a TON (arguably too many?) halftime drum parts. It could only be metalcore. In Day 4, that’s exactly what you’ll explore.
Day 5. Prog metal
Buckle up, it’s time to get progressive. Progressive rock/metal aims to take an unorthodox approach to composition using far-out musical concepts or forms. This usually manifests itself as unpredictable song structure, odd time signatures, and challenging instrumental sections.
Day 6. Power metal
Have you ever wondered what Judas Priest would sound like if J.R.R. Tolkien had written their lyrics? You don’t need to wonder – you just need to listen to power metal. In Day 6, you’ll explore power metal picking rhythms and riffs.
Day 7. Hair metal
Birthed from the glam metal scene in the 1980s its spiritual home was the Sunset Strip. This genre is about super over-the-top aesthetics in every way possible – big hair, neon guitars, and spandex onesies. Stadium anthems are the aim of the game here, hair metal fans love to chant a hooky chorus.
Performance pieces
Learn songs that put the techniques and concept you learned into a purely musical context. You'll even get to play along with a live-recorded metal band as your backing track.

Is Pickup Music right for me?
Are you a guitar player who feels like you haven’t made progress in a few months… years… or even decades?
You’re probably stuck in what’s called the ‘intermediate plateau’. This is very common and can be very frustrating.
What’s the cause? Well, it’s pretty easy to learn the basics on guitar. Learn a few open chords and you can play Wonderwall and hundreds of other songs. Learn a couple of scales and a few licks and you can play some lead.
But what then? Triads? Modes? Arpeggios? The phrygian scale?!
Without a clear plan and learning system you fall back to playing the same old chords and licks over and over again. Or you bounce around free lessons online but nothing seems to stick. It’s a recipe for a lot of practice without much progress.
That’s where Pickup Music can help. We specialize in taking players stuck in a guitar rut and turning them into advanced guitarists.
We do this through Learning Pathways that take you on a step-by-step journey towards fretboard mastery. We give you a highly structured system that shows you exactly what to work on each week to make serious progress.
These Learning Pathways take the guesswork out of your practice routine. You are guided through a proven grade-by-grade system with daily lessons, play-along practice exercises and interactive workouts.
But it’s not all about theory. We apply everything you learn to real music. That’s why every grade of our Learning Pathways build up to performing a song with a live backing band. This simulates what it’s like to play a real gig, with real musicians. It’s the absolute best way to learn.
You also get 1:1 video feedback on your playing from our expert instructors and can attend weekly live lessons. This personal feedback makes Pickup Music the closest thing to taking in-person lessons, but at a fraction of the cost.
So does this method actually work? Will you see results in your playing?
The most common thing we hear from new members is that they’ve made more progress with Pickup Music in a few months than in years of teaching themselves. As one member recently told us, “I'm finally seeing progress for the first time in many years”.
Want to hear about other members’ experiences with us? Read our independent Trustpilot reviews.
Is Pickup Music worth the money?
Private guitar lessons will cost you about $50 per lesson or $2,600 a year.
Going to a music academy will cost you about $40,000 a year.
A Pickup Music membership will cost you just $180 for the whole year.
That works out to 50 cents a day!
But it’s not just about the money. It’s about not wasting your precious time. It’s about making actual progress on this beautiful instrument.
By following our proven Learning Pathway system, you can stop wasting your time and effort trying to guess what you should practice next. Our guided programs eliminate the guesswork so you know exactly what you need to focus on each day and week to make lasting progress with guitar.
What makes Pickup Music better than other guitar lesson sites?
Most online guitar lesson sites are very good at teaching one-off songs and licks. Or they get super famous guitarists to record one-hour video lessons talking at length about their particular style and career.
The problem is that these approaches don't stick. They don’t help you to actually get better as a guitarist. You can waste a lot of time bouncing around these types of unconnected, one-off lessons. It’s a recipe for a lot of practice without much progress.
Pickup Music takes a different approach. We give you a highly structured system that shows you exactly what to work on each week to make serious progress. We take you beyond the basics through a step-by-step journey towards fretboard mastery.
By following a Pickup Music Learning Pathway, you are getting the most guided way to learn guitar. Over 6 grades, you are taken through daily lessons and practice exercises that carefully explain what’s going on behind the music.
Each grade then builds up to song performances that apply everything you’ve learned with a live backing band. These challenges - where we simulate what it’s like to play a real gig, with real musicians - is the absolute best way to learn.
The Learning Pathway method takes the guesswork out of your practice routine. Most guitarists start to see a rapid acceleration in their progress in a matter of weeks.
You can also get 1:1 video feedback on your playing and weekly live lessons. This personal feedback makes Pickup Music the closest thing to taking in-person lessons, but at a fraction of the cost.

How do the Learning Pathways work?
Learning Pathways are kind of our special sauce here at Pickup Music. They take all the guesswork out of what to practice.
You get day-by-day lessons, play along practice exercises with your instructor, interactive jams with the Pickup Music live band and you can submit videos of your playing for feedback from the Pickup Music team.
We designed this system so that you will know exactly what to practice every time you pick up the guitar. This means that even if you only have time to practice with us once a week, you will still make great progress by following a Learning Pathways.
How often do I need to practice to see results?
Ideally you would practice about three times a week for 30 minutes at a time. But we know that life gets in the way sometimes! So here’s the good news: deliberate practice matters so much more than how often you practice.
After working with thousands of guitarists, we’ve found that the most important thing is to know exactly what you’re going to practice before you pick up the guitar. Even if you can only use Pickup Music a few times a month, you will still make really good progress if you stick to the step-by-step structure of our Learning Pathways.
How long are the lessons?
Pickup Music's lesson plans are designed to suit the amount of time you have available to practice.
Whichever approach you choose, we recommend building the exercises you learn into your daily practice schedule. The best way to improve as a guitarist is through a consistent practice routine rather than sporadic, longer sessions. Learning guitar is a day-by-day, life-long journey.
Can I take the lessons at my own pace?
Everything on Pickup Music is designed to be taken at your own pace. There are no deadlines, so you can work at your own speed. You can stay on a topic until you really understand it before you move on.
While we divide our Learning Pathways into ‘days’ - this is a suggestion only. Some learners might take a few days in one sitting, while others will spend a few sessions on a single day. You can go at the pace that feels most comfortable to you.
How does the 1:1 video feedback work?
We want our members to get the closest thing possible to in-person lessons but at a fraction of the cost. That's why you can now get individual video feedback on your guitar playing from our team of expert instructors.
Here's how it works:

Is Pickup Music good for beginners?
Absolutely! We make learning the guitar fun and simple – the way it should be.
Too many people get frustrated with guitar because they develop bad habits and poor technique. Avoid these costly and time-consuming mistakes by taking Pickup Music's structured and step-by-step approach to learning guitar.
You'll start with Pickup Music's introductory program Beginner Learning Pathway. Over three weeks, we break down everything from simple chords and melodies to rhythm and lead playing. By the end of the program, you'll be able to play any simple pop or rock song (and even write your own).
Most importantly, we make sure you don't get stuck in the beginner's plateau - a common pitfall for guitarists who are just starting out. You'll keep making progress through Pickup Music's guided Learning Pathways. These programs are designed to quickly take you from a beginner player to an intermediate one who feels comfortable across the whole fretboard.
Is Pickup Music good for intermediate and advanced guitarists?
Pickup Music is the best platform available for intermediate and advanced guitarists. Our courses take you beyond the basics to advanced concepts like the CAGED system, triads, arpeggios, modes and improvisation.
The biggest trap for intermediate players is bouncing around from lesson to lesson without a plan or structure to get to that next level. We are known for taking intermediate and advanced players who have hit a ceiling and busting through until they reach the next level.
Am I too old for guitar lessons?
Many of Pickup Music’s members are in their 60s and 70s and have seen amazing success with our programs. Our platform is designed to be user-friendly for all ages and skill levels. And our supportive community is made up of guitar learners of all ages, cheering each other on.
How does the 14-day free trial work?
When you first sign up to a Pickup Music membership, you enter your credit card but it will not be charged for 14 days. That means that if you decide to cancel within 14 days of signing up, you won't pay anything.
And we send you a reminder before your trial is about to end so you don’t forget about it.
If you decide to cancel after that, you won't be charged at your next billing cycle. That means: if you’re a monthly member, you won’t be charged for the next month. If you’re an annual member, you won’t be charged for the next year.
How does the 60-day money back guarantee work?
In addition to the 14-day free trial, we offer a 60-day money back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied with your progress in the first 60 days of your membership, we will give you your money back - no questions asked.
Is it easy to cancel?
Absolutely! You can cancel at any time (although we'd be sad to see you go). Cancelling is easy, no tricks. Just go to your account page and click a button.
You won't be charged anything if you cancel during your 14-day free trial.
If you cancel after your 14-day trial, you won't be billed again at your next billing cycle. Your membership will remain active until it expires on the day it was originally set to renew.
Note: Once your membership expires, we'll save your progress on your Dashboard if you decide to rejoin at a later date.
What’s the difference between the annual and monthly plan?
The only difference is the price. The monthly membership is $29.99 charged monthly and the annual membership is $179.99 charged once a year.
That means that if you select the annual plan you will pay 50% less and save $180 over a year compared to the monthly plan.
We'll also send you reminders before we bill you each year so that you don't accidentally forget about it.
We give such a big discount for annual members because it aligns with our long-term vision to inspire and support lifelong guitar learning.
Can I buy lessons individually?
We don’t sell lessons individually. But the good news is you get access to every single lesson on Pickup Music through the one membership. If you’re only interested in one lesson, you could purchase a monthly membership and cancel when you’ve finished it – we have a hunch you’ll want to stick around though :)
How do I restart my membership?
It’s easy to rejoin Pickup Music and we’d be thrilled to have you back! We even saved all of your lessons for you while you were gone on your Dashboard.
To restart your membership, simply head to this page, select the plan of your choice, and sign up with the email address you used to sign up the first time around.
