Rain is a chill jazz and gospel inspired song by Ruben Wan. It’s easily one of his most popular videos on Instagram and with good reason: it’s super catchy and makes use of interesting guitaristic techniques.
Slow Version and walkthrough
Let’s check out how to play Rain by Ruben Wan. Use the TAB and video above to learn the notes, then move onto incorporating the three highlighted concepts below into your own songwriting.
Concept 1: Double stops
Ruben uses a double stop lick using 4ths and 3rds in E minor in this song. After you learn the lick from this video see if you can apply it to your own songs.
Concept 2: Tap + slide
Ruben plays an E minor chord and taps the minor 7th (D) on his high E string then slides into a new note. Try using the same technique on your own songs.
Concept 3: Harmonics
Ruben incorporates harmonics on frets 5, 7 and 12 in this song. After you learn his lick try writing your own harmonic-based lines.
In the next lesson you will learn Ruben’s song ‘Rose’.
